The new IBM report, “Addressing Complex and Cross-Boundary Challenges in Government: The Value of Strategy Mapping”, describes strategy management-at-scale, an approach to enable planning that addresses the major challenges facing governments at all levels.

This report, written by John M. Bryson, with Bill Barberg, Anne Carroll, Colin Eden, Bert George, Jose J. Gonzalez, Jessica Rochester, Laure Vandersmissen, and Bishoy Zaki, offers three case examples of coalitions that used strategy mapping for different purposes and to different effects.

Along with describing how strategy mapping works in practice, this report highlights the benefits of this approach. The authors offer insights into how best to implement strategy mapping, leveraging available technology to help scale the application and use of the tool. The report culminates with recommendations and advice on how to start doing strategy management-at-scale by using strategy mapping.

Leading Social Transformations: Creating Public Value and Advancing the Common Good

In May of 2021, the Journal of Change Management (Vol. 21, No. 2) published a peer-reviewed article entitled "Leading Social Transformations: Creating Public Value and Advancing the Common Good." The in-depth article focused on ways that the leadership for large-scale transformation is different from leading organizational strategies or relatively focused coalition strategies. One of the main case studies in the article involves efforts to transform the family justice system in Canada, starting with British Columbia and Alberta. That case study illustrates the use of innovative techniques and tools that build on a rich history of strategy management in ways that are designed to address social transformation in ways that create value and enhance the common good.

Enhancing Public Governance: An Agenda for 2021 and Beyond

The National Academy of Public Administration (the Academy) formed a series of Working Groups of its Fellows to address Grand Challenges in Public Administration. These Groups were charged with producing one or more papers to advise the Administration in 2021 (whether reelected or newly elected) on the key near-time actions that should be taken to begin addressing Grand Challenges. This is a paper on the Develop New Approaches to Public Governance and Engagement Working Group.

Bill Barberg, Founder & President of InsightFormation, was a key advisor for this paper. He has a video explaining what are Strategy Maps and their importance as part of it. You can read the paper “Enhancing Public Governance: An Agenda for 2021 and Beyond” HERE.

Accelerating Successful ACEs Prevention & Resilience Efforts in 2022

The ACEs & Resilience Resource Commons for Communities (ARRCC) and the ARRCC Action Network are designed to accelerate and enhance the progress that community coalitions can make on reducing ACEs, increase the use of Trauma-Informed Practices, and strengthen community resilience.

The ARRCC is a valuable resource-sharing hub, built on the same technology platform as Wikipedia® that is structured by a robust strategy map.

The ARRCC Action Network is the annual program that helps ACEs-related coalitions to both build-out and leverage the ARRCC to create their own local strategy based on the shared template and resources.

Learn more about the experiences of our participants in the 2021 group coaching program and how the ARRCC Action Network is helping their community coalitions reduce and address Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Watch this 4-minute video.
